Problem and solution

Scramble snap's inception was straight off the back of research into the crypto and NFT space. At the time generative art projects were trending and it was evident that the only way anyone could create such artwork was by means of coding or paying a programmer to do it for them. Literally no other tools yet existed so the barriers of entry were too high for many would-be project owners.

Given the trending sentiment and high value placed on the NFT space alongside the barriers for entry, there was clearly a need for someone to build a tool that made things easier.

Thus the idea of Scramble Snap was born, and this was its target audience; a very niche and select few who operated on the frontiers of technology. A small audience indeed, and yet as I perceived, one to grow as the crypto and NFT space kept growing. And as I saw, there was indeed much room to grow! So I thought I’d give it a try.

Process and methodology

This project evolved from an earlier mini project called Minty. There I was just experimenting with generatively modifying pixel images. I accomplished this by modelling an image pixel-by-pixel 1:1 onto HTML div elements. Each image pixel was dragged through an HTML canvas element to get its colour information, and could then be amended programatically.

At this point Scramble Snap was not yet a fully formed idea in my mind. I was just interested in the different ways images could be manipulated in a generative fashion, thinking that I could vaguely tie it to some NFT project or another to see what it involved.

The entire Scramble Snap application, business website, and authentication system linking the two were designed and built by myself.

The business website was built on top of a custom WordPress installation. The integrated authentication system leverages the native WordPress API to provide and verify license keys against customer data stored in the business site before allowing users to use the software for the first time.

The Scramble Snap application is itself an ElectronJS app whose frontend is written in React. The application's codebase I have since made open source and it is available here.

Results and impact

This project was instrumental in furthering my programming and professional development. It exposed me to numerous concepts and technologies including (but in no way limited to) FabricJS, ElectronJS, React, the WordPress native API, the application codesigning process, customising WooCommerce, among a host of other things.

For what seems like a remarkably simple idea, it has certainly taken me around the houses pushing the bounds of my experience, knowledge, and patience on more than one occasion.

My first sale was to a customer in the US and happened within a week. If nothing else, it was very a satisfying moment.
